It crawls on a rhythm the brain does not contain, steers by the difference in firing between its two halves, and its descending neurons set the pace. What it is

A larva, not a metaphor

The first complete brain ever mapped was not a fly. It was a maggot. Winding et al., Science, March 2023: every neuron and every synapse of a first-instar Drosophila larva, 3,016 neurons, 548,000 synapses, traced from electron microscope images at Cambridge, Janelia and Johns Hopkins. The adult fly brain the flybrain runs on came three years later. This is the original.

We load the public release of that paper: 3,013 brain neurons and 111,243 connections, each weighted by the number of synapses counted in the microscope. The neurons run as leaky integrate-and-fire units: rest −52 mV, threshold −45 mV, 20 ms tau, 1 ms step, in JavaScript, in your tab, on no GPU. The wiring is never trained. Only the mushroom body synapses change, and only downward, under dopamine, which is the rule a larva actually uses. Everyone is buying the brain. Nobody is buying the larva.

What is not real, stated plainly

The parts that aren't the maggot

The signs are missing. The public table carries synapse counts but not transmitters, so every connection here excites. A global feedback inhibition and spike-frequency adaptation hold the network in check instead of the GABA it really has. The reflexes are real wiring under a simplified rule.
The dots are not somata. The scatter is laid out by signal flow, inputs left and outputs right, hemispheres top and bottom. The paper's soma positions are not in the table we load.
The senses are the paper's; the behaviours are ours. Smell, taste, touch, light and warmth use the paper's own labels on the 431 sensory neurons, and feeding is its 184 dSEZ neurons. The five crawl behaviours are a fixed split of the 182 dVNC neurons by name, because the table does not say which is which.
The crawl is not in the brain. A real larva's crawl rhythm comes from the ventral nerve cord, which the brain table does not include, so the larva on the plate crawls at a constant pace. The brain steers it: heading follows the difference in firing between the left and right halves, and the descending lots speed it up, slow it down, or stop it to eat.
The counts differ from the headline. The paper reports 3,016 neurons and 548,000 synapses. The public processed table has 3,013 neurons and 353,859 counted synapses on 111,243 connections. We show what we load.
It has no body. The larva on this page is a point cloud drawn from gaussian shells and posed by the descending neuron rates. There is no biomechanical model.
The corpse is chosen by a person. Which fly-meta pools count as food is a list a human wrote. The larva did not pick the fly.
The brood counts tabs, not people. Every maggot on the plate is one open browser tab connected to the presence server. Open two tabs and you are two maggots. Nothing stops that, and we do not pretend otherwise.
